“Affordable Housing for All”
(As part of 7th National Convention of NAREDCO) |
National Real Estate Development Council |
Conference Background: As the country enters an era of economic growth, economic liberalization and prosperity, cities seem not yet ready to accommodate the growing population in terms of housing, basic services and city infrastructure as the twin problems of affordability and availability continue to dog the nascent real estate industry. Estimated shortage of houses in urban areas, at the beginning of the Eleventh Five Year Plan, is around 25 million and 97 per cent of this is in Low Income Group (LIG) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) categories. As per latest statics, nearly 62 million urban people live in slums and squatter settlements, comprising over 21 per cent of the urban population. The growing urbanisation is creating immense pressure on existing civic amenities and the lack of housing and civic facilities have led to the creation of slums and squatter settlements.
As, “Affordable Housing for All” is a crucial subject for overall development of the country, especially for solving problems of housing for Poor and Economically Weaker Sections of society and for developing a blueprint for building a new India, the Conference has been designed to address the major issues of Land, Finance, Technology and Legislation in providing affordable housing to all.
